Selous Game Reserve, now partially known as Nyerere National Park, is Africa’s largest protected game reserve, spanning over 54,600 square kilometers of untouched wilderness. Renowned for its stunning diversity of landscapes, including forests, grassy plains, mountains, and open woodlands, Selous offers unparalleled safari experiences. Named after Frederick Selous Courtney, a famed hunter and explorer, the reserve has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1982 due to its rich biodiversity and pristine ecosystem.
Located in southern Tanzania along the less-crowded safari circuit, the Selous Game Reserve offers a serene escape compared to the bustling Serengeti. It’s approximately 219 kilometers from Dar es Salaam, making it accessible for a 4-hour drive. The northern sector, now Nyerere National Park, focuses on photographic safaris and encompasses the lush wilderness around the Rufiji River, Tanzania’s largest river.
Selous is divided into two sections by the Rufiji River. The northern part is a photographic haven with activities such as game drives, boat safaris, and walking tours, while the southern section contains designated hunting blocks, though eco-friendly safaris dominate tourism here. The Rufiji River’s intricate network of channels, swamps, and lakes creates a unique ecological system that supports a wide array of wildlife and flora.
