the serengeti
The Serengeti is the anchor of almost every Africa Dreamland safari itinerary, and it earns that role honestly. Its Maasai name, Siringet, means roughly "the place where the land runs on forever" — and standing in the middle of it, watching over a million wildebeest move across open grassland toward the horizon, it's not an exaggeration.
What makes it more than a single spectacle is its size: 14,763 km² of grassland, riverine forest, swamp, woodland and granite kopjes, each region coming into its own at a different point in the migration's year-round circuit. There's no single "best" time to visit the Serengeti — there's a best time for whichever part of the story you want to see.
Most journeys into the Serengeti start in Arusha, with regular flights to Seronera airstrip in the park's centre — the fastest way in, and the standard choice for most itineraries. A road safari is also possible and shows off the changing landscape along the way, but takes roughly 7–8 hours.
Because the park spans four ecologically distinct regions — central, western, northern and southern — where you enter and where you stay changes the experience considerably. Africa Dreamland plans routing and lodging around whichever part of the migration calendar your dates fall into.
